Kathy Bates Health: Actress ‘Went Berserk’ After Diagnosis Of ‘Incurable’ Condition

Kathy Bates is a renowned actress known for her outstanding work in theater and film. Her career has been marked by remarkable performances, including her feature film debut in the Oscar-nominated horror film “Misery.”

While she is celebrated for her professional achievements, Kathy Bates’ personal medical journey reveals a story of resilience and strength. In 2003, she received a diagnosis that would change her life: ovarian cancer. Her battle against this disease involved a hysterectomy (the removal of the womb) and nine rounds of chemotherapy.

After initially being declared cancer-free, Bates faced another challenge when breast cancer recurred two years later. Her family history was marred by breast cancer, with her mother, aunt, and niece all having succumbed to it. To reduce the risk of a cancer recurrence, Kathy Bates opted for a double mastectomy.

She candidly shared her decision in a previous interview, stating, “When the doctor told me I had a tumor in my left breast, I exclaimed, ‘Make mine a double.’ I explained, ‘Take them both out.’ I wasn’t going to take any chances.”

Her resilience and determination were evident as she tackled these health challenges head-on. Despite testing negative for the BRCA breast cancer gene, she chose a preventative double mastectomy.

Her journey took yet another turn as she developed lymphedema, a condition characterized by the swelling of the arm and hand due to an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid. This condition often results from the removal of lymph nodes during cancer treatment. Kathy Bates shared her experience with lymphedema on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in 2019.

She described the moment she first felt the symptoms, saying, “As soon as I woke up, I felt a peculiar sensation, almost like a tingling, in my left arm. I went nuts. I raced out of the exam room and out the door. What precisely am I doing? I wondered as I hugged a pillow to my chest while still wearing my drains. I’m standing outside in the middle of July. It’s hot, I’m still recuperating, and I don’t want to injure anyone. I was outraged beyond belief. I believe it resulted from having battled cancer twice and knowing that this affliction would always be with me.”

Lymphedema is a challenging condition, but Kathy Bates, with her trademark resilience, faced it head-on. She expressed her initial bitterness and depression but also emphasized the importance of early treatment for lymphedema.

Her story sheds light on an often-overlooked condition. Lymphedema affects a significant number of people, and the National Health Service (NHS) underscores the importance of early intervention to manage its symptoms. Lymphedema is more prevalent in the United States than conditions like AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, muscular dystrophy, and ALS combined.

Kathy Bates’ journey serves as an inspiration to many, and she continues to raise awareness not only about her own health challenges but also about the importance of addressing lymphedema. Her story is a testament to her strength, and she remains a beloved figure in the world of entertainment.
