Jimmy Carter’s grandson gives update on ailing former president and first lady: ‘He’s pretty sick’

Prayers and Updates on President Jimmy Carter’s Health: A Family Perspective

Former President Jimmy Carter’s grandson, Hugo Wentzel, recently provided an update on the health of both his grandfather and grandmother after his elimination from the reality show Claim to Fame. This update sheds light on the challenges the family is facing during this period.

A Glimpse into President Carter’s Condition

In an exclusive conversation with EW, Hugo Wentzel shared insights into his grandfather’s condition. He acknowledged that despite President Carter’s determination to stay mentally active, his health is deteriorating due to his age and illness. Wentzel expressed, “He always wants to be doing something with his mind, so he’s trying to keep himself busy, but he is really sick and getting older.”

President Carter had been in and out of the hospital before transitioning to home hospice care in February, signifying a significant decline in his health.

A Touching Tribute on the Show

Wentzel’s elimination from the show led to a touching tribute where he praised his 98-year-old grandfather. He referred to President Carter as an “amazing grandpa” and shared his deep love and admiration for him. Wentzel fondly called him “Papa” and emphasized the positive impact President Carter has had on both his family and the nation.

Highlighting President Carter’s commitment to equality, Wentzel stated, “He believes in equality for everyone, regardless of race, class, gender, anything. He’s just an amazing person. I aspire to be like him one day.”

Challenges in Visiting

Wentzel revealed that due to the worsening situation, it has become increasingly difficult for him to spend time with his grandfather at the family’s Plains, Georgia home, where President Carter is under hospice care. He explained that his mother, Amy Carter, is actively involved in caring for her father and spends a significant portion of her time with him, given the restrictions imposed by COVID regulations.

President Carter’s Current State

Despite his health challenges, President Carter continues to engage his intellect by listening to audiobooks. Wentzel emphasized his grandfather’s brilliance, stating, “He still does use his brain. He listens to audiobooks. He’s a genius. He’s super smart.” Wentzel’s words reflect the deep admiration and respect he holds for President Carter.

Concerns About Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter

In addition to discussing President Carter’s condition, Wentzel touched on the health of his grandmother, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. He mentioned that she is dealing with dementia, which leads to moments of forgetfulness. However, when she remembers, it’s a heartwarming experience. Wentzel acknowledged her contributions to mental health advocacy and celebrated her resilience.

A Collective Prayer

The Wentzel family, along with supporters and well-wishers, continue to pray for both President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter during this challenging phase. The tribulations they are facing highlight the strength of their family bond and the love they share.

In solidarity with the Wentzel family, let us join in prayer for comfort, strength, and healing for both President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter.
