The American Dream Inspired Ukrainian Refugee Iryna Zarutska

When 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska arrived in North Carolina, she was full of hope. Fleeing the war in Ukraine with her mother and siblings, she was determined to build a better life in the United States. Friends and family describe Iryna as a compassionate and ambitious young woman who quickly became part of her new community. She worked multiple jobs, took English classes at a local college, and dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant. For two years, it seemed like her vision of the American dream was within reach — until one summer night when everything changed.

On August 22, 2025, Iryna was heading home after a long day at work at a local pizzeria. As she boarded a Charlotte light-rail train, witnesses say she appeared tired but happy, unaware of the danger she would soon face. Minutes later, authorities say she was attacked by a passenger, later identified as Decarlos Brown Jr., a man with a long criminal history. Surveillance footage showed no interaction between the two before the attack, leaving investigators and the community stunned. Police quickly responded, arresting the suspect at the next station. He now faces first-degree murder charges, and federal authorities are pursuing additional charges related to crimes on public transportation.

The tragedy has sparked widespread grief and outrage. Iryna’s loved ones gathered for her funeral just days later, with over a hundred people attending to honor her memory. Her uncle, who helped bring the family to safety in the U.S., said she embodied resilience and kindness. “They didn’t come here to be a burden,” he shared. “They came here to build a new life, and Iryna was the heart of that dream.” Her friends and co-workers described her as a vibrant young woman who loved animals, art, and helping others. She had even saved enough money to buy her first car and was preparing to take her driver’s license test — milestones she was deeply proud of.

Iryna’s story has become a rallying point for the Charlotte community, highlighting the importance of safety on public transit and the need for stronger support systems for both refugees and victims of violent crime. Federal and local authorities have vowed to seek justice, while her family continues to mourn a life cut short. Although her journey ended in heartbreak, those who knew Iryna remember her for her unwavering determination and the love she brought into the world — a legacy that will not be forgotten.
