A shooting at Fort Stewart left five soldiers wounded when 28-year-old Sgt. Quornelius Radford opened fire with a personal handgun in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. Soldiers quickly tackled and detained him before police arrived 39 minutes after the first alert. President Donald Trump later confirmed the shooter was in custody and praised the soldiers who intervened. “Two are very, very seriously hurt,” he said, promising justice and support for the victims.

All five soldiers are in stable condition, with three undergoing surgery and two treated at Memorial Hospital in Savannah. Brig. Gen. John Lubas confirmed none of the injuries are life-threatening. Radford, who has no combat deployments, had a prior DUI arrest unknown to the Army.

The shooting caused a lockdown and evacuations across the base. Fort Stewart, Georgia’s largest Army installation, houses about 10,000 people. Governor Brian Kemp asked residents to pray for those affected.
