Back at the house, Mia secretly calls the number and hears a panicked voice on the other end it’s her real mother. But before Mia can explain or get help, Laura discovers her and locks her away in the basement. While trapped, Mia finds medical records revealing Laura’s heartbreaking delusion: her real daughter had died years ago, and Laura had convinced herself Mia was her returned child.

Thinking fast, Mia pretends to accept Laura’s delusion to gain her trust and eventually be released. Once Laura lets her out, Mia seizes the opportunity to escape. A tense pursuit through the woods follows until a police officer arrives just in time and uses a Taser to subdue Laura. Finally reunited with her true parents, Mia feels the comfort and safety she’s been missing, held at last in the arms of the family she truly belongs to.
