Brett Gardner’s son died from asphyxiation, claims preliminary investigation

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”

The Gardners did not disclose the specific illness or circumstances surrounding Miller’s death at the time and requested privacy as they navigated their immense grief.

However, a new report has surfaced, shedding further light on the tragedy. According to TMZ, Miller died from asphyxiation while at a resort in Costa Rica. He had reportedly become unwell, along with others in the family, and local authorities are now investigating the cause of his death. Inside Edition added that several members of the vacationing group experienced severe illness around the same time.

Costa Rican investigators noted the possibility that Miller may have suffered “possible intoxication after apparently ingesting some food,” as shared by NBC News. Juan Pablo Alvarado, a representative of the country’s Judicial Investigative Agency, clarified that the official cause of death has yet to be determined pending the results of an autopsy and toxicology analysis.

This unimaginable loss has left the Gardner family devastated. Brett, who retired from Major League Baseball in 2021 after spending his entire 14-season career with the Yankees, had devoted much of his post-career life to spending quality time with his wife and two sons in South Carolina. Miller, the younger of the two, was known for his spirited personality and warm heart.

The Yankees organization, where Brett built a reputation as a dedicated and respected player, released a heartfelt message honoring Miller’s memory.

“Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner,” the team stated. “Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It wasn’t just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years — so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller.”

The team went on to speak of Miller’s personality, recalling the light he brought into any room. “We grieve with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their community of family and friends in mourning the loss of Miller, who had a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.”

They added, “Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our enduring support while understanding their desire for privacy at this time. May Miller rest in peace.”

As investigations continue and the family seeks answers, the tragedy of Miller’s untimely passing serves as a reminder of how fragile and unpredictable life can be. A vibrant young boy, full of potential, is now gone far too soon—leaving behind a family and community reeling from heartbreak.
