What Are Fordyce Spots?
If you’ve noticed small whitish-yellow bumps on your lips, cheeks, or private areas, don’t worry—they’re likely Fordyce Spots, harmless oil glands found in about 80% of people.
These spots, first described by Dr. John Addison Fordyce in 1896, are not painful, itchy, or contagious, but they’re often mistaken for conditions like STDs or genital warts. They’re present from birth but become more visible after puberty, especially in those with oily skin.
While benign, some people choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons. Treatment options include:
Cryotherapy (freezing),
Electrodessication (burning),
Laser resurfacing,
Micro-punch surgery, or
Topical creams (like retinoids).
Avoid picking or squeezing them, as this can cause infection. Good skincare—gentle washing and moisturizing—can help reduce their visibility.
Always consult a doctor if you’re unsure.
