Trump’s Executive Order Halts X-Gender Passports
A recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump is impacting U.S. passports, particularly for non-binary individuals. The order, titled Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government, mandates that official documents, including passports, recognize only male and female as sex markers.
This reverses a Biden-era policy that allowed Americans to select “X” as their gender. Following the directive, the U.S. State Department has suspended X-gender passport applications and sex marker changes. Existing X-gender passports remain valid for now, but future renewals may face complications.
