“Rare Black Canada Lynx Captured on Camera for the First Time”

A Canada Lynx, typically known for its light brownish-gray fur, was recently documented with black fur for the first time. In 2022, Thomas Jung, a researcher from the University of Alberta, captured the rare sight on video near Whitehorse, Yukon.

The footage, showing the lynx lounging before fleeing when a nearby dog barked, was detailed in the journal *Mammalia*. Experts confirmed the animal’s identity but noted limited distinguishing features due to the video’s quality. The lynx had a black coat with whitish-gray guard hairs, a striking contrast to the usual seasonal coloring of the species.

Melanism, the genetic trait responsible for the lynx’s dark coat, is rare in this species and may be maladaptive. Jung suggested the dark coloration could hinder camouflage, especially in snowy winter environments, potentially affecting the lynx’s ability to hunt.
