Expert tells parents to ask baby’s consent when changing diapers

Expert Suggests Teaching Consent During Diaper Changes

Deanne Carson, a sexuality educator, advocates for introducing a “culture of consent” from birth, including during diaper changes. While babies can’t verbally respond, Carson explains it’s about fostering respect and personal agency early on.

By narrating actions like “I’m going to change your diaper now” and pausing to observe body language or make eye contact, parents can encourage two-way communication and show that a child’s response matters.

Though unconventional, the approach aligns with expert advice on responding to infants’ non-verbal cues, promoting healthy communication and awareness from an early age.
