The opportunity came about when Van Dyke jokingly teased Drake Hogestyn, who plays John Black on the soap opera, about the lack of roles for older actors at their shared gym. To his surprise, Hogestyn offered him a part.
Van Dyke extensively researched the show’s history, watching numerous episodes spanning its 58 seasons. He also sought advice from industry friends with soap opera experience, including a message from Carol Burnett emphasizing the importance of mastering lines due to the lack of retakes.
