According to the Carter Center has provided an update on the health of Rosalynn Carter, the 96-year-old wife of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
“Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has entered hospice care at home. She and President Carter are spending time with each other and their family. The Carter family continues to ask for privacy and remains grateful for the outpouring of love and support,” the statement shared on behalf of Jason Carter, the Carters’ grandson, read.
Several months have passed since news of Jimmy Carter’s hospice admission was made public.
Six months ago, Rosalynn was diagnosed with dementia. However, the public has not been updated with much additional information concerning her condition.
Before his 99th birthday, Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, made a surprise appearance at the Plains Peanut Festival.
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have had a very full schedule during the past week.
On Sunday, October 1, the nation will celebrate the 99th birthday of its most cherished former president, who continues to outlast every other president before him (the next oldest being George H.W. Bush, who passed away at the age of 94).
Carter was born in a little Georgia hamlet of about 480 people (Plains) and grew up there.
Jimmy and his wife (who was also raised in Plains) are two of the town’s current population of less than 600.
When the former president and first lady visit Plains, they are given royal treatment.
They constructed their house in 1961 and spend their time together mostly sitting and holding hands.
In May 2023, Jimmy’s wife disclosed that she had been diagnosed with dementia.
Jimmy made the decision to get hospice care at home so that he could “spend his remaining time with his family.”
Rather than spending the day at their Plains, Georgia, home resting together, the couple surprised everyone by dropping by our office last week.
They spend most of their time at home, so it was a big deal when they decided to take a drive to the Plains Peanut Festival.
On September 23, a sizable crowd had already gathered for the annual celebration, but when a black Chevy Suburban driven by a Secret Service agent appeared at the parade, it greatly cheered everyone up.
For this particular community, that could only mean one thing: Jimmy Carter has arrived!
The former president and his wife were in the backseat, holding hands as they always did.
Many in the audience realized this would be their last chance to see the ex-President, so they let out a collective gasp as they put two and two together.
Many people at the festival agreed with the festival-goer who stated she was “overwhelmed” when his car rounded the bend.
Although Carter is a staunch Democrat and most of the locals lean Republican, they have learned to put their differences aside for the greater good of their community.
Jimmy Carter Continues to Defy Father Time
It’s not like Jimmy Carter to be here today. In 2015, this man’s melanoma metastasized to his brain and liver, an extremely fatal development.
Medical professionals still predicted his death in February 2023. He’s still breathing and loving, nearly six months later.
The Washington Post reports that former president Jimmy Carter is following the 2020 race as well as his favorite MLB team, the Atlanta Braves, who happen to be the league champions this season.
He still likes to discuss the news and enjoys watching Law & Order.
“There is just something inside him — he goes to enormous lengths to be there in person,” his niece, Kim Fuller, said – adding that he will drop what he’s doing if a friend or family member is in need.
Everyone in his family – and Plains community, in general – has nothing but good things to say about the 99-year-old.
In office from 1977 to 1981, Jimmy Carter was the 39th president of the United States.
In addition to serving as a state senator for Georgia from 1963 to 1967, he went on to become the state’s 76th governor between 1971 to 1975. We wish him the best of luck and hope he had a wonderful birthday.
