October 1, 2017, is a date etched in the memory of countless families who endured a horrifying tragedy during what became one of the worst mass shootings in the nation’s history. A deranged individual unleashed a barrage of gunfire upon a large audience at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, claiming the lives of 48 people and leaving 851 others injured.

Among the wounded was Jovanna Calzadillas, a 30-year-old mother of two. She was swiftly transported to the nearest hospital, but her chances of survival appeared bleak due to a gunshot wound to the head, as conveyed by the doctors.

Jovanna’s husband, Francisco ‘Frank’ Calzadillas, who had been with her during the tragic event, faced an agonizing decision. Doctors recommended that he contemplate taking his wife off life support, as the likelihood of her recovery seemed exceedingly slim.

The thought of a life without his beloved wife was unimaginable for Frank, and he hesitated to heed the doctors’ advice. Despite the grim prognosis, he clung to hope, refusing to give up on Jovanna.

One fateful night, Frank experienced a dream in which Jovanna appeared to him and uttered five words that sent shivers down his spine: “everything will be fine.” This dream reinforced his resolve not to “pull the cord,” and his unwavering intuition and faith proved to be well-placed.

To the astonishment of the medical professionals, Jovanna awakened from her seemingly insurmountable ordeal just days later.

Frank, a police officer with the Salt River Police Department in Arizona, reflected on this miraculous turn of events: “Her gunshot injury was difficult, but we prayed and hoped, and then she woke up.”

Jovanna’s road to recovery was arduous, demanding immense strength and determination. However, she was motivated not only by her own will to survive but also by her profound love for her husband and children.

The memories of the harrowing massacre continue to haunt Jovanna, but she strives to move forward and leave that traumatic experience behind. Today, she candidly shares her emotions and exerts every effort to lead a normal life.

“Some of me disappeared that night on October 1,” she acknowledges. “Even though I will not be the same old Jovanna, I will come back stronger.”

“I will fight for them,” Jovanna declares, referring to her family. “And I will not stop believing in myself.”

Her resolute words serve as an inspiration to countless other survivors of similar tragedies. She embodies the indomitable spirit of resilience and defiance against those who seek to instill fear.

“We will not let people like him, the shooter, win,” she affirms. “And we will not live in fear.”

Jovanna Calzadillas stands as a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to overcome even the most formidable obstacles in the pursuit of a normal life. Her journey serves as a source of hope and strength for all who face adversity.
