Ex-ESPN Host Opens Up About Uncomfortable Moment at Winter Olympics

Former ESPN journalist Sarah Spain has spoken about an uncomfortable experience sitting near Vice President JD Vance during the Winter Olympics. On her podcast, she recalled feeling “ill” while seated close to him at a hockey game, saying the heavy security presence also disrupted her experience. The moment followed the opening ceremony earlier this month, where Vance and his wife, Usha, appeared waving American flags. Cameras captured the scene, and reports described a mixed reaction from the crowd, including both applause and boos.

Spain, host of the podcast Good Game With Sarah Spain, said she was seated about 20 meters away when the atmosphere suddenly changed. “Large men in suits with earpieces filled the area,” she explained, describing the arrival of Vance, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and security agents.

She admitted the encounter left her uneasy and unprepared, saying the sudden presence of officials and tight security made her uncomfortable. Spain also said Secret Service agents blocked part of her view during the hockey match, which frustrated her as she tried to watch the game.

Despite the disruption, Team USA delivered a strong performance, defeating Switzerland 5–0. Spain noted, however, that the security situation overshadowed her experience at the event. Vice President Vance, who led the U.S. delegation at the Olympics, later met with Team USA athletes and encouraged them to enjoy the experience while representing the country with pride.
