How to Make Perfect Baked Potatoes (Plus Topping Ideas)

Baked potatoes are a classic comfort food because they’re both simple and endlessly versatile. With crisp skin and a soft, fluffy center, they work just as well as a side dish as they do as a full meal. Their appeal lies in their simplicity—no special equipment or complicated techniques, just basic ingredients and a bit of patience. Baked potatoes also adapt easily to different tastes and lifestyles.

On their own, they’re naturally low in fat and provide nutrients like fiber, potassium, and vitamins C and B6. Choosing the right potato makes a difference, and starchy varieties like russets bake up especially light inside. A light coating of olive oil or butter and a sprinkle of salt help the skin turn golden and flavorful without overpowering the potato.

Preparation is straightforward. Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C), wash and dry the potatoes thoroughly, and prick them several times with a fork to release steam. Rub with oil or butter if desired, season with salt, and bake directly on the oven rack or a baking sheet for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on size. When ready, the skin should be slightly crisp and a fork should slide easily into the center.

Once baked, toppings transform the potato. Sour cream, cheese, and chives are classic, while vegetables, beans, or plant-based options can make it a complete meal. Easy to store and reheat, baked potatoes remain a dependable, satisfying favorite in any kitchen.
