Do You Remember Her? Here’s How She Looks Now

Phoebe Cates is best remembered for her iconic roles in 1980s films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Gremlins, where she played Kate Beringer. Instantly recognizable to a generation of moviegoers, she appeared in 16 films over a 12-year period before quietly stepping away from Hollywood in the mid-1990s.

Born in New York City on July 16, 1963, Cates came from a family with strong ties to the arts. She studied at prestigious schools including Juilliard and began modeling at a young age after a serious knee injury ended her dream of becoming a ballet dancer. Though modeling paid the bills, she never enjoyed it and soon transitioned into acting.

Her film debut came in Paradise (1982), followed by her breakout role as Linda Barrett in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a coming-of-age classic that later earned a place in the U.S. National Film Registry. She went on to star in Gremlins, Gremlins 2, Private School, Date with an Angel, Drop Dead Fred, and Princess Caraboo, the latter becoming one of her final leading roles.

Despite her fame, Cates often said she preferred theater to film, finding stage roles more fulfilling and varied for women. While her later movies struggled commercially, Drop Dead Fred eventually gained cult status.

Cates left acting primarily to focus on family. She married actor Kevin Kline in 1989, and they have two children. In 2005, she opened a boutique called Blue Tree in New York City, which she continues to run. Now in her late 50s, Phoebe Cates occasionally makes small appearances but has chosen a quieter, fulfilling life away from Hollywood—one defined by family, creativity, and balance.
