Community Raises $1 Million for 88-Year-Old Veteran Working at Supermarket After Losing Pension

An 88-year-old army veteran, Ed Bambas, will finally be able to retire after a viral online campaign raised over $1.5 million for him. Ed lost his pension in 2012 when his former employer went bankrupt. Around that time, his wife fell ill, and he had to sell their home to cover her care and lose his health insurance.

Since his wife’s passing seven years ago, Ed has continued working at a supermarket 45 miles west of Detroit, doing eight-hour shifts five days a week, to make ends meet. He was nominated by influencer Samuel Weidenhofer, who traveled from Australia to Michigan with local influencer Mike McKinstry to find Ed. Samuel filmed an emotional encounter at the store, where Ed explained his struggles. He received a $400 tip on the spot and a GoFundMe was set up for him.
