Actor who played Buck Rogers, dies at 82

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century star Gil Gerard has died at the age of 82. His wife, Janet, confirmed that the actor passed away Tuesday after a brief battle with what she described as “a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer.” In an emotional Facebook post, Janet wrote that from the moment they realized something was wrong, only days passed before his death.

“No matter how many years I got to spend with him, it would never have been enough,” she shared, urging others to hold their loved ones close. Gerard also left behind a final message, posted on his behalf by his wife. Reflecting on his life, he called it “an amazing journey,” filled with meaningful opportunities, lasting friendships, and deep love.

He encouraged people to pursue what brings them joy and love, ending with: “See you out somewhere in the cosmos.” Born in Arkansas, Gerard studied acting in New York before moving to Los Angeles. He rose to fame as Captain William “Buck” Rogers in the 1979 sci-fi film and TV series.

Though initially hesitant about the role, it became the defining moment of his career. Gerard also appeared on The Doctors, Little House on the Prairie, and in numerous commercials. He is survived by his wife Janet and his son, Gib.
