Elvis Stole Every Scene, But His Hair Told a Different Story

Did you know Elvis Presley’s very first movie, Love Me Tender (1956), is available to watch for free on YouTube? For longtime fans, it’s a nostalgic return — and for new viewers, a chance to see the King at the very start of his Hollywood journey. Set just after the Civil War, the film mixes romance, family conflict, and Western drama. Originally titled The Reno Brothers, the name was changed to match Elvis’s breakout song, which quickly became a massive hit.

He played Clint Reno, the youngest of four brothers — and the only character in any of his films based on real historical figures. The premiere in New York was pure hysteria. More than 1,500 fans camped outside the theater, and inside, screams nearly drowned out his dialogue. It wasn’t just a movie debut — it was a cultural moment. Though Elvis wanted to be taken seriously as an actor, his manager ensured every film featured his music.

Still, Elvis worked hard, memorizing not only his own lines but everyone else’s. Co-stars remembered him as humble, polite, and deeply focused. One surprising detail: Elvis’s character dies at the end, a twist that upset his mother so much that producers added a final silhouette of him singing over the credits.

By then, he’d dyed his hair jet black — creating one of the film’s most famous continuity errors. With all its charm, flaws, and heart, Love Me Tender remains the moment Elvis stepped into Hollywood history. Watch it here: Love Me Tender (1956) on YouTube
