Farmer Plants 1000 Oak Trees

In the quiet countryside of Gloucestershire, England, farmer Winston Howes created something extraordinary to honor the love of his life, Janet. When Janet passed away in 1995, Winston was heartbroken. Searching for a way to express his grief, he began planting oak trees—over 1,000 of them—across a six-acre field. Only he knew the secret pattern they formed. “It was a flash of inspiration,” Winston said. “I planted several thousand oak trees.”

For years, the grove was a private memorial known only to locals. Then, in 2012, a hot air balloonist flying overhead captured a breathtaking photo: at the grove’s center was a perfectly shaped heart, its point angled toward Janet’s childhood home. What began as a husband’s private tribute became a global symbol of love, resilience, and remembrance.

The oak trees were no accident—they symbolize strength and endurance, mirroring the couple’s lifelong bond. Over time, the grove flourished into a lush forest, each tree representing a cherished memory and a step in Winston’s healing. “I feel lucky that people can see this and feel inspired by the love I have for Janet,” Winston said.

His quiet act of devotion became a living love letter—a reminder that even in loss, something beautiful can grow. Winston’s grove stands today as proof that love doesn’t end when a life does—it simply takes root and grows in another form.
