Bo Derek Proves Age Is Just a Number

In the late 1970s, Bo Derek became an icon. With her golden braids, piercing blue eyes, and effortless beauty, she defined an era and captured hearts around the world. But behind the glamorous image was Mary Cathleen Collins — a California girl with humble roots and a lifelong love for horses. Born in Long Beach in 1956, Bo was drawn to acting and equestrian sports from a young age.

Her breakout came with the 1979 film 10, directed by Blake Edwards, where her braided hairstyle became legendary. Before that, she’d appeared in Orca (1977), and later starred in Tarzan, The Ape Man (1981), Bolero (1984), and Ghosts Can’t Do It (1990).

At 16, Bo met film director John Derek — then 48 and married to actress Linda Evans. The two began a controversial relationship, marrying when Bo was 19. John became her creative partner, photographing and directing her until his death in 1998. Bo later admitted she felt guilt over the pain their relationship caused Linda Evans, calling it something that stayed with her for life.

After John’s passing, Bo stepped away from acting to dedicate herself to animal welfare and veterans’ causes. She became an advocate for horse protection and served as honorary chair for the VA’s National Rehabilitation Special Events.Today, Bo Derek, now married to actor John Corbett, lives a quiet, fulfilling life centered on compassion, advocacy, and love — still proving that true beauty never fades.
