Newhart and Ginny had a very prosperous marriage. They had been married for sixty years. Unfortunately, a recent family tragedy caused their relationship to end.
Bob Newhart’s wife of 60 years has died after a long illness as details emerge
Recently, Newhart announced the deaths of his wife and the mother of his children on Facebook. He wrote that she had been ill for a while and concluded by musing:
“We miss her terribly. She was our rock.”
In the post’s comments section, fans expressed their sympathy and love for Newhart and his wife, saying that they were an example of a married couple who could endure hardship together and embrace new generations.
Numerous news outlets also covered the passing of Newhart’s wife, noting that she was 82 at the time of her death and was survived by her husband, four children, and an astounding ten grandchildren.
A mutual friend arranged for Newhart and his wife to go on a blind date in 1960, which was the beginning of a wonderful romance between the two of them. Buddy Hackett suggested that Newhart goes on a date with a girl he knew while the two were guests on “The David Susskind Show.”
Given that Ginny was an Irish Catholic and that Hacket was also a Catholic, he believed that Newhart should get to know Ginny. Hacket snorted:
“You’ll meet her, go on dates with her, and get married.” When you have children, you will refer to one of them as “Buddy.”
Because they had a good time together and shared similar values, Newhart quickly realized that she was the one for him. In celebration of Buddy, the couple named one of their daughters after him after their 1963 nuptials.
Despite being both in the entertainment industry—Ginny worked as an extra in movies—the couple managed to create a beautiful life together without ever attending an A-list party or mixing with the rich and famous. They favored spending time together at home instead.
When questioned about his decision to marry his wife at the time, Newhart said he didn’t have any regrets. Instead, he believed that if he could have afforded it, he would have wed his wife sooner.
He recalled when his debut album was released and peaked at number one on the charts, lamenting the fact that he had no one to celebrate with. Although he knew he couldn’t afford to get married, Newhart wished he could have shared it with Ginny.
In reference to Ginny, Newhart said, She was the total package.
She was present for all of Newhart’s successes and failures after he wed Ginnie. Even when things didn’t go according to plan while he was performing, she always encouraged him. Finally, he had someone with whom to discuss everything.
