9-Year-Old Girl Drowns at Hersheypark — Community Mourns

A family trip to Hersheypark turned tragic when 9-year-old Sophia Subedi of Harrisburg drowned in the Boardwalk wave pool on July 24. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but she could not be revived. The Dauphin County Coroner’s Office confirmed her cause of death as accidental freshwater drowning.

Sophia’s passing has deeply affected the Bhutanese Community of Harrisburg, where she was known for her kindness and bright spirit. The community organization released a heartfelt tribute, describing the loss as devastating. Sophia had recently completed third grade and was remembered as a joyful child who loved reading, music, and helping others.

Hersheypark officials expressed sorrow over the incident. CEO John Lawn stated that lifeguards responded immediately and did everything possible to save her. He emphasized that guest safety remains the park’s top priority and confirmed that an internal review is underway in cooperation with authorities.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Sophia’s family with funeral expenses. A memorial service will be held at Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where family, friends, and community members will gather to honor her life and memory.
