Seconds Before Impact, Air Canada Pilot Made a Move That Saved 74 Lives

What began as a routine landing at LaGuardia Airport quickly turned into chaos — but a last-second action from the cockpit may have prevented an even greater tragedy. An Air Canada Express flight collided with a fire truck late Sunday night after landing, forcing a shutdown of the airport for several hours. Officials confirmed that both the pilot and co-pilot were killed, while two fire officers were injured. More than 70 passengers were onboard.

Passengers described the terrifying moment the situation changed. One traveler shared that about 30 seconds after landing, the aircraft suddenly jolted forward, followed by a loud bang and a sensation of sliding sideways. At first, many didn’t realize what had happened, but panic quickly spread through the cabin. Amid the confusion, one detail stood out — a final maneuver by the pilot. According to passengers, the pilot attempted reverse thrust just before impact.

That split-second decision may have reduced the force of the crash and potentially saved dozens of lives. Many onboard later called the pilots heroes. In the aftermath, one of the pilots was identified as a 30-year-old from Quebec who had dreamed of flying since he was young. Family members shared that he began flying at 16 and never stopped pursuing his passion.

Air traffic control audio captured the tense moments before the crash, with urgent warnings to stop a vehicle on the runway, followed by confusion and silence. The collision brought operations at LaGuardia to a halt, with emergency crews rushing in and passengers left shaken — a stark reminder of how quickly routine travel can turn into disaster.
