(2) What I Learned From a Chance Meeting With a Child Years Ago

I kept visiting over the following weeks, and what began as short check-ins grew into something deeper. Eventually, I became his guardian, offering him a stable home. Life wasn’t easy, but it was steady. He grew into a dedicated student, while I focused on providing security and encouragement.

Thirteen years later, I came home early to find him with a school counselor, emotional but not in trouble. He had been offered a full scholarship to a prestigious university but feared accepting it would mean leaving me behind. I assured him that helping him move forward was my greatest role as a parent. In that moment, I learned that love isn’t about holding on—it’s about giving someone the confidence to go, knowing they can always come home.
