Toddler Dies After Dental Procedure in North Carolina

A North Carolina family is mourning the loss of their 2-year-old son, Er’mias Mitchell, who died following a routine dental procedure at Valleygate Dental Surgery Center in Greensboro. According to his parents, the toddler was healthy before the visit, bringing along his favorite T-Rex toy and wearing his usual smile. But shortly after being administered anesthesia, they were informed that he had suffered a collapsed lung.

The Mitchells say they were not allowed to ride in the ambulance with Er’mias and were not immediately told he had been transported to the hospital. His father, David Mitchell, described the heartbreak of arriving at the hospital only to find their son unresponsive. A U.S. military service member, David recalled Er’mias as a joyful, intelligent boy who brought happiness to everyone around him.

The boy’s grandmother, Kyra Smith, has since called for increased awareness and accountability to help prevent similar tragedies. The family wants to ensure Er’mias’s name is remembered and that other families don’t endure such loss. In response, Valleygate Dental Surgery Center released a statement offering condolences and affirming their commitment to patient safety, while acknowledging that complications during surgery, though rare, can happen.

State officials, including the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Dental Examiners Board, have confirmed investigations are underway. Meanwhile, a community-led fundraiser has been launched to assist the family with funeral and legal expenses. As the Mitchell family grieves, they continue to seek justice and answers surrounding the untimely passing of their beloved son.
